At the District 9-5A wrestling tournament at Carrollton RL Turner High School on Thursday, Feb. 8, six Melissa wrestlers qualified for the regional tournament — four girls and two boys. Lady Cards qualifying included Lilly Rogers, Hastings Fredrick, Queen Humphrey and Viktorya Dietrich. Rogers was district champion in her weight class and Frederick was the runner-up in hers. Humphrey and Dietrich placed fourth and fifth, respectively.

“The girls wrestled hard and most qualified for regionals,” Melissa girls head coach Rick Gagarin said. “Hastings Fredrick met a state-ranked girl and wrestled impressively for three rounds until finally getting pinned. All these girls have improved so much over the season. “

On the boys’ side, seniors Tyler Sandoval and Spencer McGreer also qualified for regionals. McGreer took fourth place in his 152-pound class and Sandoval was fifth in the 145-pound class. The Cards’ head coach is Kyle Dezern.

The Class 5A Region 3 tournament will be held at Bryan/College Station, Tex., Feb. 16-18.
