"Paisanos y Paisanas" or "My fellow countrymen (and countrywomen)”, we recently came across a taqueria on the north side of McAllen that surprised us for a couple of reasons. Taqueria El Paisano found on the Northside of McAllen claims to be the “best tacos in town” and “[their] goal is your satisfaction”. Whenever someone makes such a claim, you know your gals here at Dishin’ It will be doing some hard-hitting journalistic work to find out the truth. Plus, we’ve been wanting to scope them out for a few weeks now, so this was the perfect opportunity!

First of all, you might be thinking, “A taqueria in North McAllen? Close to 'Gucci-B'?” Why, yes, and in a brand-new sparkling, recently constructed plaza. Another random thought that may pop into your head, “Well, are they actually the "best" tacos in town?”

Well, ladies and gents, we checked with our gut and of course the rest of our table, and the response was an overwhelming, "Yes!". We initially thought we had come across a dud, since we were one of the first parties visiting El Paisano that Sunday. It could be because it was early Sunday mid-morning (yes, we know how confusing this sounds), or it also could be that they had just opened their doors and we were waiting in the parking lot. Nonetheless, our doubts were immediately pushed aside when we saw the droves of people walking in through the doors as soon as our orders were served at our table. Couples, friends, large families who just left church services walked in, sat down and happily ordered from the various menu options. The place had gone from zero to 100 miles per hour in just the blink of an eye. At least that's how it seemed to us.

Besides your typical tacos de maiz and harina, El Paisano also offers breakfast for those who are willing to get up early and be productive on Sunday mornings. Breakfast tacos like chicharron en salsa, machacado con huevo and, one of our personal favorites, nopalitos, are just a few options. You can always order a full plate of barbacoa, breakfast gorditas and machacado. No judgement here.

Even though breakfast was ridiculously tempting, we skipped right through that and decided to put El Paisano’s claim to the test, but not before we ordered a surprisingly massive bowl of menudo and half an order of quesadillas. The size option we ordered was "small" but, as mentioned, it was nothing short of large.

We ordered tacos de bistec, trompo, chicken and molleja. Oh, and to top it all off a nutritious order of gorditas were they fried the actual gordita instead of cooking, thus giving it a nice fluffy and light texture.

We can happily report that no taco was left behind and everyone pretty much had a food coma after our extensive research. While the tacos were up to par and delicious, we will hold back on agreeing that these are the best tacos in town. Why you may ask? Because if we say yes, then all of our taco research would come to an end. However, it is nice to know that now we have a great taqueria we can visit after Sunday evening grocery shopping!
