Though they have gotten off to a rocky start in district play, the Lady Jags showed Friday that they will not back down from any side in the league.

Robert Garcia’s girls were defeated by Vela, 5-0, but the score does not indicate the effort expended. Led by rugged Maria Rocha, the Lady Jags slammed their way through the night, holding Vela to two goals in the first half.

Garcia, whose team was whipped by Weslaco 6-1 to start 31-6A, was pleased with his girls and the way they scrapped for 80 minutes.

“Yes, totally pleased, proud of them tonight,” said the veteran coach, who was down a couple of starters to injury but got a game night in goal from Kristen Moralez. “The score, well, they got three in the second half, we subbed in a bunch, I wanted to get all the girls in there, for experience. I think we gave an improved effort from the first game, so if we keep playing this hard, we’ll be alright.”

Vela rebounded from a loss to North in the opener Tuesday with goals from Kristyn Calvillo, Taylor Campbell, and Jaleina Carrillo, and also saw twin sisters Danna and Dayana Cantu each find the net on their birthday.

The Lady Coogs of North beat Donna North in penalty kicks Friday, after regulation ended nil-nil in a clash of top league teams. EHS topped Weslaco East, 3-0 in its initial 31-6A match.

The Econ boys clobbered Vela 6-3 in the first game of the doubleheader at Vela Friday as Chris Garcia and Erwin Galicia led the charge. The Jags raced to 2-0 ahead of Tuesday’s big home match against Donna North.

“This upcoming game is very important,” Coach Sam Gonzalez told his side after the win. “It’s going to tell a lot about how the race is going to be, so we need to be ready to play.”

In other boys’ action Friday, EHS beat Weslaco East, 2-1, and North went down 2-0 to Donna North.

In boys’ hoops, Vela won for the seventh time in a row, slamming EHS 70-45 at home to rise to 8-1 in district, 23-9 overall. After upsetting Weslaco earlier in the week, EHS dropped to 4-6 in league play but is still in contention for the final playoff spot with two games left, against Donna North and Weslaco East, teams with a combined one win in district. Econ kept pace with Vela with a 53-40 win over North and is 9-1 with final tilts coming up against the SaberCats and Weslaco. The Coogs dropped to 4-5 with the defeat and have matches versus Weslaco, Vela, and Donna North left to contest. Their schedule is way tougher than that of the Bobcats, admittedly.

The North girls recorded a victory Friday against Econ, avenging an earlier loss to the Lady Jags suffered in overtime. The Lady Coogs rolled 42-27 in their first win in district, while Econ finished its season 1-11, 7-21.
