Not a real good football week for those not named Vela as both EHS and Econ were whipped, the Bobcats at Weslaco and the Jags at home by Weslaco East. North escaped the bad luck night by enjoying the bye, and will be back in action Friday against Econ.

For the Coogs (1-3 in District 31-6A, 1-7 overall) and Jags (1-4, 4-5), this is an absolute win to have with most of the playoff dance cards just about punched. EHS (2-2, 6-2) has beaten its city rivals but most contend with undefeated Vela next, Thursday.

The city doubleheader should help figure out the standings somewhat, as the North-Econ winner could be tied, or close, with the Bobcats should they lose to the SaberCats (4-0, 8-0). North would indeed be tied at 2-3 with a road game at Weslaco left to play Nov. 9, while the Jags would be 2-4 with the victory.

However, Econ is finished for the regular season after the North tussle and will be idle the last week as the other 31-6A teams try and gain the magic third league victory. EHS has a gimme after Vela, in Donna North, though that Nov. 8 bout is on the road, meaning that the ‘Cats have the inside track on the final spot in the postseason.

Vela and Weslaco East lead the league at 4-0, with Weslaco next at 3-1, with an East-Weslaco collision on tap this week. The Wildcats and SaberCats will match up Nov. 9 in Edinburg, in a game that might well decide the 31-6A title, unless of course EHS can upset the Sabes and/or Weslaco knocks off the Wildcats. Then things would get pretty wild.
