Melissa’s undefeated Lady Cards (8-0) cruised past Gainesville, 4-1, on Friday, Feb. 9, at Cardinal Stadium. The win pulled the Lady Cards even with Celina on points for the top spot in District 5-4A.

Fifteen minutes into the contest Gillian Stopinski’s goal off a Lilly Hubbard assist gave the Lady Cards a 1-0 lead. At the 30-minute mark of the first half, Stopinski got the ball to Erin Eichel who sent home Melissa’s second goal. The Lady Cards led, 2-0, at the break. Reagan Eichel’s early-second-period free-kick goal from 45 yards out sent Melissa’s lead to 3-0. The Leopards’ only goal of the night came next on a penalty kick.

Lady Card Emma Schaeffer’s rebound goal concluded the night’s scoring.

“This was a good test for us tonight because of their physicality,” Melissa head coach Manuel Avila said. “In the first half, it was giving us fits but we made a few changes in the second half and really dominated the game.”
