Van Alstyne PiPs, or Players in Progress, is a local sports organization available to children who are in kindergarten through sixth grade. PiPs is in its sixth year in Van Alstyne and has 53 students currently enrolled.
The Van Alstyne Pips are under the direction of Angie Best, the wife of Van Alstyne varsity boys basketball coach Russel Best. The program is not just a local program, with PiPs having groups throughout Texas, Oklahoma and even in places as far as New York. The program uses basketball skills to teach core concepts of work ethic, responsibility and integrity.
During the winter basketball season, the group practices on Monday nights and then performs at halftime of selected home varsity basketball games. The performance highlights the basketball ball-handling skills to a fun music show exhibition.
The PiPs will be performing at the championship games of the Highway 5 Basketball Tournament in Anna this weekend. They will also perform at halftime of the Dallas Legends, Harlam Globetrotters and an All-Star group at the Texas Tech men’s game. Keep your eyes peeled for theese tiny players, because they are the future of basketball!
