Lions miss out on team regional berth

ABILENE — For the fourth consecutive year, and seventh time in the last eight seasons, the Brownwood Lady Lions are district cross country championships.

The Lady Lions achieved a four-peat Wednesday at Sherrod Park as all six runners placed in the top eight, giving Brownwood a minuscule 18-point total and comfortable 34-point victory over 5-4A runner-up Abilene Wylie. Trailing Wylie (52 points) were Big Spring (84) and Snyder (97.)

The Lions, meanwhile, finished fourth with one runner — Joe Gosch — advancing to the Region I-4A meet at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock on Oct. 23. Brownwood produced 70 points and trailed regional qualifiers Big Spring with 22 points, Abilene Wylie with 58 and Snyder with 66.

In girls action, Lady Lion senior Kyra Young won the individual district championship in a time of 12:41.79 trailed by runner-up Darby Crysler, a sophomore, at 12:53.3 and third-place Izzy Lawrence, a junior, at 13:08.86. Junior Audrey Boren finished fifth in a time of 13:16.17, sophomore Trinity Buitron placed seventh at 13:37.84 and junior Alex Fowler came in eighth at 13:43.41.

On the boys side, Gosch, a junior, recorded a ninth-place time of 18:49.68 as the top 10 individuals, including those on qualifying teams, move on. Senior Damian Cisneros was 12th in a time of 19:09.8 followed by freshman Roman McKibben (14th, 19:18.81), senior Logan Dick (15th, 19:21.95), junior Kaleb Painter (20th, 19:41.97), freshman Hunter Day (21st, 19:48.74), and senior Jason Sanchez (25th, 21:02.85).

In subvarsity action, the Lady Lions also were victorious with 18 points while the Lions came in third with 75 points.

The Brownwood seventh and eighth grade girls teams earned district titles as well, while the junior high boys were second to Snyder.
