Academy Award nominee, Emmy winner and Golden Globe winner Edward James Olmos will serve as a special guest at AMA-CON 2018.

Amarillo Public Library Public Relations Coordinator Stacy Clopton Yates made the announcement Monday at the library’s downtown branch.

“AMA-CON, which was started by Friends of the Amarillo Library in 2012 and has grown into an event that is a gift to the community, is Amarillo’s original pop culture convention,” she said. “It’s a celebration of comics, animation, gaming, science fiction and everything else that is geeky and awesome. We are really excited about Edward James Olmos being a part of this year’s event.”

Yates said Olmos is known for his work on critically acclaimed biopics such as “Stand and Deliver”, “Selena”, beloved animated films like “The Road to El Dorado” and his television work on programs such as “Miami Vice” or the “West Wing”. He has starred in major sci-fi features as “Blade Runner” and “Battlestar Gallactica”.

She said Olmos is also a noted humanitarian, having worked with and contributed to organizations such as the United Way, Boys and Girls Clubs of America, the National Wildlife Federation and the Thank You Ocean Campaign.

Officials said AMA-CON serves as a fundraiser for Friends of the Library, allowing the organization to continue its mission of supporting the library by providing funds for programs such as the Summer Reading Club, Amarillo Reads Community Reading Program, English as Second Language citizenship classes, STEM programs and many other education enrichment events throughout the year.

Yates said Olmos will participate in a diversity and pop culture panel during AMA-CON, which will be held Aug. 4-5. Officials said attendees will be able to purchase a two-day pass for $8 while the single-day admission is $5.

“Our Director of Library Services thought of inviting him,” she said with regard to the impetus to seek Olmos as a guest. “We were able to contact his representation and they have been fantastic to work with. He was great to work with as well.”
