It was a record-setting season for Vela on the diamond but it came to a close last weekend, as the SaberCats dropped a pair to SA Churchill in the regional semifinal series.

After having won three series to get to the fourth round for the first time ever, the Sabes (29-7) could not get past Churchill, which advanced to face city rival Reagan in the Final 8. After losing 7-3 on the road to start the series Thursday, the Sabes combated the Chargers at UTRGV Saturday afternoon, dropping a 9-2 decision.

Jaime Perez’ club won District 31-6A and then defeated Harlingen, Eagle Pass, and Los Fresnos to reach the fourth stage. The team set a program mark with those 29 victories, and returns a bunch of excellent players for 2019. Juniors Ramsey Amador, Yulean Torrellas on the left side of the infield and Eric Martinez at first will all be back, along with outfielders Nico Rodriguez and Jonathan Navarro, catcher Jaime Perez Jr., and infielder Isaac Lopez. Marc Esquivel should be one of the prime pitching options next year, along with Amador and Rodriguez.
