Parents seeking to ensure their children avoid the “Summer Slide” can register them for the Summer Reading Program at the Dustin Michael Sekula Memorial Library. The program is designed to help children retain their reading skills during the summer while enjoying fun and entertaining activities. This year’s theme is “Libraries Rock” which will focus on the importance of music in our everyday lives.
The children’s department’s programming begins on Monday, June 4th and runs for five weeks of programs, officially ending with the Summer Reading Carnival on Friday, July 13th. A special guest performance by comedian, Kirk Marsh, will take place in lieu of the kick-off on Thursday June 7th from 6-7 p.m. at the Edinburg Municipal Auditorium.
The children’s program activities will feature “Duet” Yourself Mondays, an arts and crafts program where children will be given the opportunity to design and make their own musical instrument or toy. Movin’ ‘n’ Groovin’ Toddler Tuesday is a lap-sit program designed for children 18 months to 5 years of age. It is complete with songs, puppet entertainment, story time, and an age-appropriate craft. Studio Day Wednesdays will alternate from physical activity such as dancing to art play such as painting with music. Visit the A Capella Café on Thursdays where children will learn how to make no-cook snacks and treats. Shakers ‘n’ Music Makers Fridays will feature guest presentations ranging from dance performances to conversations about bird songs. This weekly event is open to the family.
If your children are older, we have fun, educational programs for them as well; Tween programs (grades 6th-7th) are scheduled for Mondays and Tuesdays. They will include Music Icebreakers, Music & Fashion Game Day, Learning about Music Notes and Rhythm, Classical Music: Then and Now, and Summer Reading Movie and Inspirational Lyrics as Art craft.
