During National Women's History Month, we continue in recognizing a few of the fabulously fierce and inspiring female restaurateurs of the Rio Grande Valley’s food industry. Our second featured Boss Lady of the month has not only one, but TWO thriving restaurants in the RGV, with a third located in New Braunfels, Texas.

Formerly a practicing attorney in Mexico, Elizabeth Treviño eventually decided to pursue her inspired passion for cooking and follow in the footsteps of her great grandmother, grandmother, and mother, making her part of the fourth generation of women in her family to become a restaurant owner. Treviño currently owns La Playa Grill in Harlingen, Texas, La Playa Fajita Grill in McAllen, Texas, and Las Fontanas Mexican Kitchen in New Braunfels, Texas.

Although we were already certain we’d be visiting Treviño’s McAllen restaurant at some point during this month, we still weren’t sure exactly when that would be. Well, after perusing through social media in search of dining and drink specials being offered in honor of International Women’s Day, our minds were quickly made up. Turns out, the only local restaurant we found promoting food and beverage specials for International Women’s Day was, in fact, you guessed it, La Playa Grill. Thanks for the show of love and appreciation, La Playa!

Gaby: 1/2 priced house wine bottles and $3 house wine glass? Ummm...yes and yes!

Trisha: Glad that’s decided on (lol) Now, Family Appetizer or La Playa Appetizer? Wait, does two even qualify as a family?

Gaby: It does now! (wink)

Once our friendly and attentive server arrived with our “Family” appetizer (1 large chicken fajita-stuffed jalapeno, 4 slices of ground beef nachos, 1 chicken flauta, and 3 slices of chicken quesadillas served with sour cream and guacamole, then garnished with lettuce and tomato), we devoured it in minutes. Yeah, note to self, don’t ever underestimate the hunger of two hard working, determined women on a mission.

One sizable, empty platter later, we were trying to figure out what else to try. Yes, although we seemed to have practically swallowed the food whole, we did thoroughly enjoy every last bite of it. It’s hard not to savor the tender, shredded chicken inside the flautas and spicy jalapeño stuffed with melted, Monterrey Jack cheese. Besides, we weren’t done yet and we tend to follow through on we set out to do. Research, research, research!

Trisha: What are we tackling next?

Gaby: Not sure, but let’s keep it light.

Trisha: Agreed. So, straight to the dessert? Got it!

With the mutually agreed upon choice having been made, we ordered our Sopapillas (pillow-like puffs of deep-fried pastry, sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar, then drizzled with honey) and a couple of Cucumber Margaritas on the rocks to wash them down with.
