An Alice Police Department investigator confirmed the arrest of the suspected shooter in the 40-year-old murder case of Alice police officer Matthew Murphy.

The arrested was made late Wednesday night in Alabama. Alice Police Chief Rex Ramon, police department Sgt. Aniceto Perez and Texas Ranger Nat Mutz made the trip to Alabama earlier in the day to serve a capital murder warrant.

The identity of the suspect arrested Wednesday was not revealed, and police said they may not be prepared to speak of the case until a formal press conference Monday morning. Police did say they had interviewed the suspected before.

Murphy was murdered after stopping a vehicle at the intersection of West Main Street and U.S. Highway 281 in Alice. Another officer found him with gunshot wounds, but Murphy died at the hospital.

Witnesses told detectives they saw a two-door car leaving the scene, and they said more than one person was inside. But, officers were never able to find the vehicle.
