EDINBURG – Dozens of Edinburg CISD students recently partnered with the American Red Cross of South Texas to write letters for the children affected by Hurricane Harvey.
“I feel that it’s important, because it’s not fair that they are going through that,” said Elizabeth Romero, a fifth-grade student at Kennedy Elementary School.
Coordinators from the Edinburg CISD’s Texas Afterschool Centers on Education (ACE) Program spearheaded the writing project. The Texas ACE Program provides expanded learning opportunities for children and their families and offers innovative, hands-on activities that reinforce and complement students’ regular academic programs.
“Our children are learning to be grateful for their education, for their homes, for their food and for their family,” said Maricela Ochoa, the Texas ACE Site Coordinator at Kennedy Elementary School. “They are also learning that Texas is strong and we are out there to support neighboring communities.”
While writing the letters, some of the students made headbands that displayed a word to express how they felt about the devastating disaster. Some of the words they wrote, included gloomy, upset, fearful and terrified.
Elizabeth, who wore a headband with the word “heartbroken,” said that she hoped the children along the Texas Coast were back in school and would be happy when they received her letter. “I hope they feel excited, have more confidence and never give up,” she said.
Students with the Texas ACE Program at De Zavala Elementary School also participated in the letter writing project.
“This particular process is getting the students involved with what’s happening in current events, understanding what’s happened in their state, and understanding the ramifications of inclement weather in other areas and how students are affected by it,” said Michael Garcia, a fourth-grade teacher at De Zavala. “It’s our way also of connecting with other students in our state to let them know that we are thinking about them and this is what we can do to help.”
Members of the American Red Cross of South Texas will deliver the letters to the Hurricane Harvey survivors along the Texas Coast.
