Tuesday was not a good day for the volley teams in town as there were three defeats suffered. North was beaten by Harlingen and EHS lost at Edcouch, while Vela battled San Benito well before falling.

The Lady Sabercats were on the short end of identical 25-23 counts in all three sets while the Lady Bobcats went out in four after being nipped in the clincher, 30-28. The teams continued their run-up to district play, which begins Sept. 9, with action at the Mission Tourney. None of the teams scored a win on Day Two, with EHS making the Gold Bracket, Vela and North the silver.

In the opening cross country romp of the new season, the Vela boys ran third at the Edinburg High Invitational Saturday with EHS sixth and North ninth. North’s Tristan Pena, returning to the sport after a year off, won the race at Ebony Hills, in 15:58.2 as the only city kid in he Top 10.
