LA JOYA – A dozen of the best diamond gems in town gathered for one last go at it Saturday night as the 12th annual high school senior showcase was played.
There were eight city baseball stars in attendance, three from North, two each from Vela and Econ, and one from EHS. The softball squad included four locals, which shows that the town teams have a lot of undergraduate talent returning for 2018.
On the West baseball roster were Cougars Saul Garza, Carlo Servin, and Jon Salas; Vela was represented by R.J. Ochoa and Ryan Rodriguez; Econ sent Gerardo de Leon and Ismael Lopez; and the Bobcats had Jaime Cansino. Most of those kids will be headed to college to play, including Cansino, set to join the team at North Central Texas College in Gainesville.
The quartet of softballers was as follows: Jackie Longoria and Maria Garza of North plus Dezi Marmolejo and Anngie Salinas of EHS. No more Dez … sigh.
Saul Garza of North was the center of attention during the baseball action, having been drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals last week. The hard-hitting catcher is going up to Howard College in West Texas, where he expects to play early and often, improving his draft status for the future.
