After a lackluster performance in Game One, the Lady Bobcats came out and gave a much better account of themselves, but lost a 1-0 squeaker at home, dropping out of the softball playoffs in the third round.

EHS, following a 10-1 blowout loss at Weslaco Thursday, battled the Pantherettes to a standstill behind a 5-hitter from graduating senior Dezi Marmolejo. But Weslaco, which defeated the Lady ‘Cats at this stage last season on the way to state, plated a run in the sixth to advance, leaving Coach Ramon Arciba’s outfit at 28-4 overall and a step away from the state Sweet 16.

Game One had been a bummer as Weslaco turned a close game after two frames into a rout with three runs in the third and then six in the sixth. The only Edinburg run came in the fourth when senior Becca Delgado legged out a triple to the gap in right center, driving in Kristee Salas.

But facing elimination Friday, EHS showed the skill and poise that had made it the undefeated district champ, and the 28 victories this year matches the total put up by Jesse Banda’s Sweet 16 teams of 2011 and 2012. The school record for triumphs in a season remains 30, set in 2010 and tied in 2013. In the past eight years the program has won 212 times, losing just 55 times, for roughly 80 percent success.
