EDINBURG – The U.S. Border Patrol's Rio Grande Valley Sector recently saluted four high school students from Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District as part of its “Head of the Class” program.
Border Patrol officials said that the program recognized the academic excellence of 59 high-achieving seniors at high schools throughout the Valley. Students were nominated by their respective schools and selected by a committee.
The students were honored for being well-rounded students, who are involved in their school and communities, as well as excelling in academics and promoting a drug-free lifestyle.
The Border Patrol recognized the following ECISD students:
Gina Rae Garza, Edinburg High School Senior
Emily Jennifer Rios, Edinburg North High School Senior
Jaquelin Vega, Economedes High School Senior
Vanessa Gutiérrez, Vela High School Senior
The program also brought together local businesses as partners to highlight and recognize the efforts of students, who were role models for their peers.
All of the students will now compete for four $1,000 scholarships, which the Border Patrol expects to award in the spring.
