EDINBURG — The Museum of South Texas History (“MOSTHistory”), a museum chronicling the heritage of South Texas and Northeastern Mexico, welcomes the community for an educational and fun-filled weekend of events.
MOSTHistory Happy Hour returns on Thursday, Jan. 26, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. This monthly series invites young professionals – and the young at heart – to an event that provides a chance to taste new beer, participate in interactive history and a unique networking experience. This month’s featured beer is Big Bend Brewing Company from Alpine, Texas, which will be served by our Happy Hour FRIEND which owns both The Landmark Lounge and Ignite Lounge located in Edinburg. Also included are light appetizers, a scavenger hunt with a mini-guided tour of the River Frontier gallery and a photograph opportunity with a mammoth backdrop. The fee is $15 for general admission (ages 21+) and $10 for FRIENDs of MOSTHistory (ages 21+).
MOSTHistory Education Department and UTRGV Book Buzz unveils a new monthly children’s program: Read Aloud. On the fourth Saturday of every month, a children’s illustration book will be read aloud to guests followed by a free craft inspired by the story. The first Read Aloud program is Saturday, Jan. 28, at 2 p.m. All ages are welcome to attend.
Sunday Speaker Series continues on Sunday, Jan. 29, at 2 p.m. with a special presentation by Dr. Steven Schneider who is a poet, author and professor of creative writing and literature and cultural studies at the University of Texas - Rio Grande Valley. Schneider will present “The Magic of Mariachi/La Magia del Mariachi” which includes a background history of the illustrations by frontera artist Reefka Schneider. Twenty-four works of art were inspired by numerous encounters with mariachi musicians in their performance settings and are coupled with lyrical poems inspired by the paintings. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the Museum Store and can be signed by the author after the presentation.
