EDINBURG – For the second year in a row, fourth-grade student, Isabel Thoppil, clinched the top spot during the 24th Annual District Spelling Bee recently hosted by the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District.
“I’m very excited that I’m the winner,” said Isabel, who won the first-place title as a third-grade student last year. “I'm going to study and memorize the words, so that I can prepare for the regionals.”
Isabel and 78 other students from third grade to eighth grade participated in the competition, which was organized by the district’s Library Services Department.
The five students who will be advancing to the 29th Annual Rio Grande Valley Regional Spelling Bee competition in March are as follows:
First-Place Winner – Isabel Thoppil, fourth-grade student at Trevino Elementary School
Second-Place Winner – Kalei Serrano, eighth grade student at South Middle School
Third-Place Winner – Joseph Abenoja, fourth-grade student at Jefferson Elementary School
Fourth-Place Winner – Amarei Garcia, fifth-grade student at Gorena Elementary School
Fifth-Place Winner – Ann Jacob, fourth-grade student at Trevino Elementary School
The champion of the regional competition will win an all-expense paid trip to compete in the 2017 Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.
