For the final salvo of football awards for the 2016 season, the local media came out with its All-Area team last week, and a number of city kids were represented with honors.

Three SaberCats from Vela were first team on offense, including QB Nate Garcia, RB Robert Guerra, and OL Joey Carreon. For the first team defense, another trio was named; DL Sebastian Bulos of North, DB Nick Enriquez of Vela, and LB James Champion of EHS. Enriquez and Champion will be back next year along with Vela’s Garcia.

Six locals were on the All-Area second unit, four on offense: RB Christian Flores of Vela (headed to North for 2017); linemen Caleb Luna and Jaime Alaniz of Vela, and Econ OL Hugo Velasquez. Defensively, EHS’s standouts pair of DB Danthony Alvarez and LB Edgar Guerrero was named.
