His efforts along with other leaders in the region led to the formation of a regional economic development organization, Rio South Texas Economic Council. He has also been a longtime transportation advocate having served on the state advisory Interstate 69 State of Texas Advisory Committee and has advocated for higher education and served a key role in the creation of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Medical School by working with his colleagues to come up with local community support and funding critical for the Medical School.

“Steak” In Your Community is held annually, with the goal of raising funds  to support youth development programs at the Boys & Girls Clubs and the Youth-of-the-Year scholarship program. The event includes a fast-paced auction, live music from the RiverRock Band, good food by Palacios Endowment, and great company.

“Here in Edinburg, funds raised by the “Steak” In Your Community event are making an impact on so many lives,” Garza said. “From making possible the vital youth development programs and services that support youth in our community who need us the most, to life-changing hope and opportunities, to providing access to quality educational support through Science Technology Engineering & Math, the money raised through “Steak” In Your Community is helping further the vision of a world where kids have a safe place to learn and grow.”
