EDINBURG – Jaida Muhammad attacked the rim at the buzzer to close the third quarter. She made the score 35-35 and it was only fitting the final quarter of play would decided a seesaw of a match between the Edinburg Lady Bobcats and the Robert Vela Lady Sabercats.
Keeping pace the Lady Bobcats scored eight straight in the fourth quarter. Slowly the Lady Sabercats tried to crawl their way back eating a good portion of the clock in the process.
To no avail though, the Lady Bobcats took their biggest lead of the game when Jayla SantaMaria put a move on the defense for the basket and the foul. At the end Jayla dribbled the ball out to give the Lady Bobcats the 54-45 win over the Lady Sabercats.
Edinburg coach John Salinas was not surprised the game was close knit until the final quarter.
“This is a rivalry,” he said. “This is what we play for, this is all athletics does for us, our girls played a heck of a game and so did the girls from Vela.”
SantaMaria led the way netting 22 points with Jenessah SantaMaria scoring 16 points.
The pace of play began slow but picked up just before the first half ended. It was Janessah who pulled up and buried a three-pointer to give the Lady Bobcats their first lead of the game with two minutes to play. The half came to a close with Vela having a 24-21 lead.
The pace continued during the third quarter. Back and forth they went, each team trying to find an advantage to put the game away.
With the win the Lady Bobcats not only remain undefeated in district play but also at home.
The Lady Sabercats on the other hand know that this was just a small bump on a long season.
“Bottom line we need to move forward from this,” Vela coach Lottie Zarate said. “Both teams battled, we took the lead, they took the lead and it was a seesaw effect but bottom line at the very end we need to hit the free throws.”
The Lady Sabercats went 7-for-18 from the charity stripe and Zarate knew in order to win her team has to be able to chip away at leads especially in games this close.
Saturday Dec. 31 the Lady Bobcats will face PJSA Memorial on the road at 2:30 p.m. The Lady Sabercats return to action sooner at the West Oso Tournament Tuesday Dec. 27.
