The City of Edinburg, The Edinburg Chamber of Commerce, and the Edinburg Economic Development Corporation announce the official kick-off to the 2016 Holiday Season.

Edinburg residents and visitors alike are encouraged to load their lawns chairs and get ready for two days of family-friendly entertainment beginning Dec. 1, with the Annual Lighting of the Christmas tree. Mayor Richard H. Garcia and the Edinburg City Council will gather in the Courtyard at Edinburg City Hall at 6 p.m. for the symbolic lighting of the tree. They will be joined by children from the Edinburg Consolidated Independent School District who will sing and dance for those in attendance.

Meantime, the lighted parade will take place on Friday at 7 p.m. The annual event will begin at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Campus on the corner of Sugar Road and University Drive. It will head east on the north lane of University Drive and will end at the Hidalgo County Courthouse square.

The fun will continue after the parade with a free musical performance by Midnight Run in the Courtyard at Edinburg City Hall from 8:30 – 10:30 p.m. Additionally, a Winter Wonderland snow play area will be available for children to enjoy. There is no charge to play in the snow thanks to the sponsorship by the EEDC

And no party is complete without food so booths will be lined up on McIntyre Street with delicious treats for purchase. Santa Claus will also make himself available and will be available for pictures in front of the Christmas tree.

Spectators for both events are encouraged to bring their lawn and arrive early as University Drive gets jam packed. More than 60-thousand people attended last year’s event. As always parking is free and available all around City Hall.

Please note that University Drive will close to through traffic at 5:30 p.m. in preparation for the parade.

The lighting of the tree and the parade will be broadcast live via the City’s Cable Network ECN17-12 and streamed on the City’s website
